+INRI stands for “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum” (also:  “Jesus Nazarenus Rex Judaeorum”). (lat.= “Jesus, King of the Jews”). In roman tradition the reason for an execution has to be made public. Here the sign “INRI” did this, because bearing the title of a King was forbidden by the romans since 4 BC.
