INRI steht für “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum” (lat.:=Jesus von Nazareth, König der Juden). Nach römischer Sitte wurde der Grund für eine Hinrichtung öffentlich angegeben. Dies wurde hier durch das Schild “INRI” getan, da das Tragen eines Königstitels seit 4 v. Chr. durch die Römer verboten wurde.

INRI stands for “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum” (also: “Jesus Nazarenus Rex Judaeorum”). (lat.= “Jesus, King of the Jews”). In roman tradition the reason for an execution has to be made public. Here the sign “INRI” did this, because bearing the title of a King was forbidden by the romans since 4 BC.
