Der hier dargestellte römische Hauptmann zeigt mit dem Finger auf den verstorbenen Jesus und erkennt diesen letztlich mit den Worten: “Dieser war in Wahrheit Gottes Sohn!”. Da man im deutschen Mittelalter nicht mehr wusste, wie ein römischer Zenturio aussah, malte man ihn wie einen (im Rang entsprechenden) Ritter.

The Roman centurion points with a finger at the deceased Jesus and acknowledged him ultimately with the words: "This was really God's son!". Since in the German Middle Ages nobody knew how a Roman centurion looked like, he was painted as a knight.
