Joseph war einer der Jünger Jesu, hatte aber Angst vor Verfolgung und hielt dies daher geheim. Nach der Kreuzigung bat er Pontius Pilatus, den Leichnam Jesu bestatten zu dürfen. Das Felsengrab, welches Joseph zur Verfügung stellte, war eigentlich vorsorglich für ihn selbst gedacht gewesen.

After the crucifixion he asked Pontius Pilate for the permission to bury Jesus. The tomb provided by Joseph was meant for himself.
