Die Geißelung Jesu wurde wurde auf Befehl des Statthalters Pontius Pilatus durchgeführt und kennzeichnet den Beginn der körperlichen Leiden Jesu. Dieser ist in der Mitte des Bildes, an eine Säule gefesselt, zu sehen. Um Ihn herum stehen Schergen welche ihn schlagen Hier hat man auch immer das Prophetenwort assoziiert, das “viele Hunde mich umgaben” (circumdederunt me canes multi) (Ps 21,17).
