The flagellation was executed due to the order of proconsul Pontius Pilate and marks the beginning of the physical sufferings of Jesus, who can be seen in the center of the panel, bound to a pillar. He is surrounded by henchmen whipping him. Oftenly those torturers were compared to “dogs, who surrounded me” (circumdederunt me canes multi) (Ps 21,17). |
