This scene is not described by any of the evangelists, it is based only on the prophets' word: He will smash the gates of hell "and crush the serpent's head" (Gen 3:15). Christ frees Adam, Eve, John the Baptist and other unnamed Biblical forefathers from limbo. Thus, the act of the abolition of sin has been accomplished.
