Simon of Cyrene is not mentioned in the Evangelium of John. The other evangelists portray him as a simple peasant on the way home, who was forced to help Jesus carrying the cross. In the Late Middle Ages the representation of Simon changes: he is often shown as a voluntary bearer of the cross, to whom it is an honor to be allowed to bear the cross of Jesus. |
