Simon von Cyrene wird im Johannes -Evangelium nicht erwähnt. Die anderen Evangelisten schildern ihn als einfachen Bauern auf dem Heimweg, der dazu gezwungen wurde, Jesus beim Tragen des Kreuzes zu helfen. Im Spätmittelalter wandelt sich die Darstellung des Simon: oft wird er als freiwilliger Träger des Kreuzes gezeigt, dem es eine Ehre ist, das Kreuz Jesu tragen zu dürfen.

Simon of Cyrene is not mentioned in the Evangelium of John. The other evangelists portray him as a simple peasant on the way home, who was forced to help Jesus carrying the cross. In the Late Middle Ages the representation of Simon changes: he is often shown as a voluntary bearer of the cross, to whom it is an honor to be allowed to bear the cross of Jesus.
