This banderole shows the text “Crucifige crucifige eum”. The crowd is demanding that Jesus should be crucified. Translated from latin it means: “Crucify, Crucify him!”. In addition, two men show the gesture of the crossed index fingers. This marks the people of the Jews as the guilty ones of the death of Jesus. Medieval preachers often used this depiction to agitate against Jews.

The flagellation was executed due to the order of proconsul Pontius Pilate and marks the beginning of the physical sufferings of Jesus, who can be seen in the center of the panel, bound to a pillar. He is surrounded by henchmen whipping him. Oftenly those torturers were compared to “dogs, who surrounded me” (circumdederunt me canes multi) (Ps 21,17).

This figure shows particularly the artistic roots of Martinus Schwarz since his garment and turban are based on a recurring guiding figure in Martin Schongauer´s etching of the passion of Christ. The overcoat of the henchman partially has been taken over from the hurrier of Schongauer’s work “The Great Carrying of the Cross”.

With his hand on Jesus' collar, the henchman tries to grind forward the fallen Jesus. He has a counterpart in the "great cross-bearing" of Martin Schongauer. As a so-called "repoussoir figure", the viewer's eye, which is to run from left to right, is again directed back to the face of Jesus. The proximity of Jesus to the bullet-filled purse of the henchman must be an obscene counterpart to the Franciscans striving for poverty.

Simon of Cyrene is not mentioned in the Evangelium of John. The other evangelists portray him as a simple peasant on the way home, who was forced to help Jesus carrying the cross. In the Late Middle Ages the representation of Simon changes: he is often shown as a voluntary bearer of the cross, to whom it is an honor to be allowed to bear the cross of Jesus.
